John Wesley Bower, 79, of 919 Rose Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Jameson Care Center.

Born May 6, 1934, in New Castle, he was a son of Frank P. and Helen A. Ramsey Bower.

John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra Fugh Bower, whom he married Nov. 6, 1971.

He attended New Castle Business College, where he graduated in 1954. John was employed with the former Chambers Motor Co., where he worked in the parts department for several years. He then was a custodian with Pennsylvania Power Co. in the West Pittsburg Power Plant for 13 years, retiring in 1993.

 Among his many interests, John enjoyed musicals and concerts. He often went on bus trips and especially liked going to the Pittsburgh Pirates games. He enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, and in his younger years, was an avid bowler.

Prior to his membership with Highland Presbyterian Church, he was a longtime member of Epworth Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, Sandy, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Kristen Bower of New Castle; a brother, Dr. James N. Bower and his wife, Jane, of New Castle; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Burial was in Castle View Memorial Gardens.

John was the 44th classmate to walk down the aisle at graduation.
