Lyn Thayer Taussig (Class of 52), who used to live in California, also passed along this photo. She said she moved back to Monroe, New Jersey, in 2008 after her husband passed away. She is enjoying living within 3 miles of her children and grandchildren, Kate, 7 years, and Spencer, 9 years. While missing the rains, like the rest of us here in the East she is contending with the cold and snow.

Christmas and weather
for Classes of 52, 53
We asked classmates from the Classes of 52 and 53 to tell us about the bad weather they are experiencing, especially those in California.

Happy Holidays to all! Weather in Nova Scotia is very mild. Temperatures in the daytime are in upper 30s. Winds have been quite high, currently okay. We've had a lot of rain, a tiny bit of snow, but no snow in our forecast in the near future. Regretfully, after several glorious clear days and nights, the clouds and storming moved into the province in time to block any viewing of the full moon and historic lunar eclipse, which happened here beginning at 2:30 a.m. early morning of the 21st. I would have set my alarm for such a great opportunity!

At the last check of my rain gauge (on Dec. 22), it indicates that we have received close to 6 inches of rain and it is still coming down.  No problems so far other than having to empty water from the pool. Have minimized driving as the other drivers can be hazardous to your health.  As seen on the news, many areas have serious problems that will continue to get worse.  This storm is expected to clear out today but another is expected around Sun-Mon.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

As I take pen in hand the thunder is rolling off toward Los Angeles to the North West. This series of storms is a phenomenon that occurs irregularly about every ten years. It is entertaining to watch the local news stations ramp up their coverage of the "Storm Watch".  I guess that's the point. Downed trees are a favorite for reporters in the field, along with the flood control channels, that is until the mud starts out of the canyons. There is a lot of water coming in from the vicinity of Hawaii and it just dumps on us.  It is reported to be a Non El Nino condition but tell that to the rain. It is at most times a fine, but persistent drizzle  and has been for the last three days. Today is predicted to be the final onslaught with the attendant thunder showers and high winds.  Us flatlanders don't have worries about the debris flows out of the canyons. Anyone who lives in a canyon or near a natural run off from the mountains would have the worrisome evening.

We are all OK here, thanks for asking.

We are in northern california near S.F. and we've had quite a bit of rain but no flooding.  Lake Tahoe is enjoying the best ski season in 10 years!!!  The snow is already 14 ft. on top of the ski lifts, and it is only December!!  Quite a hearty season for winter sports in CA.   The whole coast - north to south - is being hit pretty hard.  We plan to go to San Diego for Christmas to be with our son and grandchildren.  San Diego is doing pretty well,  it's the Los Angeles area that is being hit pretty hard.  We are happy to see the snow in Tahoe which means the lake will be up and the fun will last into the summer when the snow melts and fills up the lake for summer boating, skiing, and fun, fun, fun!!!!.  Merry Christmas to all....

Merry & Blessed Christmas to you. Here in the Sacramento region of northern Ca. we have had much rain and snow in the mtns East of us; but the nice thing is that there have been breaks in between storms which gives us valley dwellers a relief from the potential flooding that might have occurred. The snow has been a problem for drivers wishing to go over the 7200 foot summit, but the easily informed take precautions; e.g.: chains. We in the valley are not effected by any of the snow problems.  In the southern part of the state there are dangers of mud slides, etc for those living near the ocean or on hillsides.  Thank you for your concern and for sending out this e-mail.  Hope you have some relief from what appears to me from reports I get a VERY cold stretch!  Hope all is well and you face a very pleasant and peaceful new year.

At Tahoe the rain/snow mixture seems to be feet and feet of snow on the ski slopes and the rain means there is no shoveling at my house. Earliest skiing in years, and a beautiful white Christmas.  Now LA and San Diego..... that's another story.
