Connie Frigone Mangino
1934-2016
From New Castle News

Connie M. Mangino, 82, formerly of Mahoningtown, died December 17, 2016, at Jameson Care Center.

Born on July 15, 1934, in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Mary Maglieri Frigone. On May 14, 1955, she married Thomas M. "Bear" Mangino, and the two spent 34 years together until he died August 6, 1988.

Connie retired from the New Castle Area School District in the mid 1990s. She also worked for the Bell Telephone Company in the 1950s as an operator. She was born, raised and raised her children in the same home in Mahoningtown.

Two of her passions were politics and sports, particularly when it involved her children and grandchildren. She could always be found at some ball field, whether it was a baseball game, track meet, junior high or high school football game. She was always the loudest voice in the stands. Her enthusiasm for sports took her to a St. Louis Brown's baseball game on her honeymoon and continued through her attending 12 college football bowl games, including the 2000 National Championship game at the Orange Bowl.

She was a dedicated member of the Lawrence County Democratic Committee for many years. She ran for New Castle City Council in the early 1980s, and played an instrumental role in a number of countywide political campaigns. Her years in politics brought her in contact with congressmen, senators, governors, and the President of the United States. She attended the 1988 presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C.

She was a proud member of the Leapers of '52, her Ne-Ca-Hi graduating class of 1952.
Connie was an avid gardener, whether it was at her recent home in Neshannock Township, or at her homestead in Mahoningtown. She was known to take a plant home from her travels across the country and re-plant it in her garden.

Connie is survived by her children, Mark "Bear" Mangino and wife, Mary Jane (Fiorante), of Naples, Fla., Matthew Mangino and wife, Juliann (Galmarini), and Marianna Mangino, all of New Castle; brother, Sabatino Frigone and wife, Margaret, of New Castle; sisters, Mary Jane Diana and husband, David, of Sarasota, Fla., Sue Johnston of Marysville, Pa., and Sandi Doubt and husband, William, of New Castle; grandchildren, Samantha and David Hardy of Oklahoma City, Okla., Tommy and Danielle Mangino of Lexington, Ky., Mark Mangino of New Castle and Melina Mangino of New Castle; and five great-grandchildren.

Entombment took place in Castle View Memorial Gardens.

Connie was the 170th classmate to walk down the aisle at graduation. After her name in the Yearbook it reads: Squad Leader 11-12; Home Representative 10; Concert Choir 12; "Father of the Bride" 12.
