Howard Albert Gaston, 79, of Gardner Stop Road passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013, at his residence with his family by his side.

Born Nov. 26, 1933, in New Castle, Howard was a son of the late John S. and Dorothy (Humble) Gaston.

 He is survived by his wife, the former Sandra McCollough, whom he married Sept. 16, 1957. 

Howard graduated from New Castle High School in 1952 and attended New Castle Business College.

 He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Germany from 1953 to 1956.

 He was an active member and elder at the Center Presbyterian Church of New Castle. He worked for Bell Telephone Co. as an installer in New Castle for more than 40 years. Following retirement, he and his wife enjoyed their sailboat at the Ashtabula Yacht Club. He was past master of the Lodge of the Craft Westminster No. 433 and District II Commander of the United States Power Squadron.

A Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he was seldom seen without a Steelers' shirt.

In addition to his wife, Howard is survived by three children, Rev. Dr. Howard (Donna) Gaston of Barnet, Vt., Russell (Pam) Gaston of New Castle and Tracey (John) Sinopoli of New Wilmington; nine grandchildren, Sandra Perrine, Rebecca Gaston, John Gaston, Amanda Gaston, Jenna Gaston, Richard Gaston, Danielle Clingerman, Melissa Black and Cody Black; and a great-granddaughter, Harley Clingerman.

 In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John S. Gaston; and his sister, Shirley Dover.

Interment was to take place at Center Church Cemetery.
Howard was the 176th classmate to walk down the aisle at graduation. After his name in the Yearbook, it says, "There's something about a hometown band." Student council committee 12, Hall Patrol 10-12, Band, 10-11-12, Drum Major 11-12.
