    William Thomas Mansfield, 77, of Reidsville, N.C., died at home on Aug. 22, 2011, after a month-long battle with cancer.
    He was born April 20, 1934, in New Castle to the late William D. and Helen Tinsley Mansfield.
    Bill earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Case Institute of Technology, Cleveland, and a master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School in Boston.
    After 25 years of service with GTE in Pennsylvania, Canada and North Carolina, and one U.S. patent, Bill taught mechanical classes for Burlington Industries in Greensboro, N.C., for nine years.
    He was an Army veteran.
    Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years, Beatrice Fehrenbach Mansfield; sons, Michael Mansfield and wife Susan, and Steven Mansfield and wife Tara, all of Reidsville; a granddaughter, Caroline Mansfield of Reidsville; brothers, John Mansfield of Alabaster, Ala., and Phillip Mansfield of Slippery Rock; and two sisters, Ann Hill and husband Edward, and Gayle Pugh and husband Thomas, all of New Castle.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David Mansfield; and a nephew, Aaron Mansfield.
    A private family service is to be held at a later date.
    Because Bill was such a believer in and supporter of education, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials be sent to the Rockingham County Community College Foundation, and marked “restricted to the Mansfield Endowed Scholarships, Box 38, Wentworth, N.C. 27375.
