From New Castle News

Dr. Anthony Samuel Mastrian, 74, of Neshannock Township, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at Jameson Hospital.

Born March 22, 1935, in Sharon, he was a son of the late Anthony and Edith Tomasetti Mastrian.

After serving as a Commander in the United States Public Health Service, he moved back to  New Castle and opened a surgical practice in 1968. He served the community as a general surgeon at St. Francis Hospital and Jameson Hospital, where he served on many committees and as president of the medical staff at each hospital. After retiring in 1993, he continued to serve the community as physician at the Lawrence County jail and at the St. Francis Hospital psychiatric ward.

Anthony was a  member of St. Camillus Church. He also participated in the Lawrence County Catholic Men’s retreat group. He cherished many retreat weekends at the St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center in Pittsburgh.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy James Mastrian, who was at his side, along with his family at the time of his death. Other survivors include his children, Anthony Mastroianni of Sewickley; Jeanne Cipollini and her husband, John, of Bryn Mawr; Michael Mastrian and Theresa of Alexandria, Va.; Christine Avallone and her husband, Mark, of Rockville, Md.; John Mastrian of New Castle; Stephen Mastrian and his wife, Stephanie, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister, Mrs. Don (Annette) Colucci of New Castle and a nephew, Donald Colucci of New Castle. He had nine grandchildren, ranging in age from 18 years to 4 months old, Alex, Angela, Annette, Stephen, Zachary, Thomas, Abigail, Dominic and Madeline.

He was extremely dedicated to his patients. His family and friends will remember him as a person who cared deeply about the well being of others and who opened his heart and home to all. In continuation of his dedication, even in death, he decided to donate his remains to a medical school for the advancement of research.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial is to be celebrated Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at St. Camillus Church. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome a donation in his memory to St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center, 148 Monastery Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa., 15203.

Thanks to all of the healthcare professionals who provided the same care and dedication to him that he provided to others during his life.

Funeral arrangements were by the William F. and Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Ave.
