What a difference 50-plus years make. The new building New Castle students will enter on Wednesday, Jan. 21, for the second semester of this year is a far cry what we had in the 50s.

A list of the amenities:

  * The building is air conditioned and there are security cameras in the hallways with several monitors in the main office.

  * 36 regular and specified classrooms, each with two computers for students and a laptop for each teacher.

  * 5 computer labs. There are 425 computers  in the labs and classrooms. In addition, there is a mobile computer lab with 25 laptops and several SMART Boards, which are interactive whiteboards that can project information from a computer onto the board so the class can see it.

  * 1 business classroom.
  * 2 family and consumer science classrooms.
  * 2 chemistry labs.
  * 3 biology labs.
  * 1 physics lab.
  * 2 general science classrooms.
  * 1 library classroom.
  * 3 technical education labs.
  * 1 yearbook room.
  * 1 newspaper room.
  * 2 faculty rooms.
  * 1 faculty lounge/dining room.

  * 1 television studio. A modern television studio will be used for morning announcements and for an elective class on video production.
 
  * 1 nurse's suite.
  * 1 administration suite.
  * 1 guidance suite.

  * 2 cafeteries. There will be a la cart offerings, in addition to regular school offerings. Also, tickets for students receiving free and reduced-price lunches have been eliminated. They will use the same card as those paying the regular price.

  * 1 serving area.
  * 8 student toilets. There will be motion sensors on the toilets and sinks in the restrooms and in the classroom lighting systems. Lights go on when one enters a classroom and go out when the room is vacated.
  * 8 faculty toilets.
  * 3 conference rooms.
  * 2 small-group instruction rooms.
