Doris Ann Mittler Callahan
1934-2004

Doris' years in high school

She was the 312th classmate to walk down the aisle. This is what was written in the Senior Directory at the back of the Yearbook. "Always bubbling over with personality." Goal Post 12th grade , Editor; Home Room Representative, 10th grade; Auditorium Usher, 11th and 12th grade; Dofobs, 11th grade; Y-Teens, 10th, 11th and 12th grade; Spanish Club, 11th and 12h grade.
We lose another classmate

Doris Ann Mittler Callahan, 69,  of 119 N. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage, Pa., died at 12:20 p.m. Jan. 15, 2004, in Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh, following an extended illness.

Doris was born May 5, 1934 in South Bend, Ind., the daughter of Joseph A. Mittler and Lillian Wright Mittler. Doris' family moved to New Castle in 1943.

Following graduation, she worked for Bell Telephone in Pittsburgh as a shift supervisor until she married James E. Callahan, also of New Castle, on May 4, 1957.

Doris and her husband established Sunshine Window Cleaning in 1981 and she continued its operation with her son, James J. Callahan, after her husband's death on Dec. 27, 1983.

Doris was a lifelong member of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Hermitage, where she was a Eucharistic minister, often serving the sick and shut-ins. She was involved in the Ave Marie Society, the parish catering service and belonged to the church's small community group.

She was an active member in the Hermitage Women's Club and Mercer County elections.

In the 1970s she also took an active role in lobbying for the mainstreaming of the mentally and physicially challenged children into the public school systems.

Surviving are two daughters: Denise Hubicz and her husband, Raymond, of Hermitage, and Lori Lyn Callahan, at home; two sons, James J. of Sharpsville, Pa.,  and Brian Paul Callahan, at home; a granddaughter, Jennifer R. Pander, of Hermitage; two sisters, June Faraone and her husband, Chuck, of New Castle, and Mary Therese Sovesky of New Castle; a brother,  Joseph A. Mittler Jr. and his wife, Donna, of New Castle.  She also leaves an extended circle of family members and close friends.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 19 in Notre Dame Church in Hermitage. Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.

She is the 84th classmate to pass on.
