LAKE MILTON - Rose Mary Pagley Flanagan, 77,  died July 8 at the home of her daughter.

“She gave definition of how to fight cancer with grace and dignity.”

Rose was born July 11, 1934, in New Castle, Pa., the daughter of Dominic and Rachael Pagley.

After graduating from New Castle High, Rosie, as a very early non-conventional student, graduated from Youngstown State University in 1984, earning a Bachelors Degree.

She had worked in the Financial Aid Department of Y.S.U. for over 20 years before retiring in 1995. After her retirement, Rose Mary and her husband, John, would spend the winter months in Jupiter, Fla., where she worked at the Bealls Department Store.

She attended St. Patrick Church, the Lake Milton Boat Club, Riverbend C.C. in Jupiter, Fla., and was the founder of the “Families in Touch” support group, and the Rose Mary Flanagan Ovarian Cancer Foundation. Rose was known in the Youngstown area as an advocate for better care and understanding of those with mental illnesses. She served on the Mahoning County Mental Health Board.

Rose Mary is survived by her husband, John P. Flanagan, whom she married in 1955; four daughters, Sheila ( David Engler) Flanagan McKinney of Canfield, Bridget (Pete Stevens) Flanagan of Lake Milton, Christine (Bob) Donaldson of Orlando, Fla., and Erin M. Rose Mary was preceded in death by her birth parents; her stepmother, Lucy Felix, who raised her; and a sister, Esther Stevens.

The family has requested that material tributes in her memory take the form of donations to the Rose Mary Flanagan Ovarian Cancer Foundation at P.O. Box 534, Canfield, OH 44406, www.rmfocf.org.
