Richard N. Ross, 79, of 1116 S. Mercer St., formerly of East Home Street, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at Jameson Hospital.

He was born May 27, 1933, in New Castle and was a son of the late Frank A. Sr. and Theresa Pacelli Ross.

In earlier years, Dick worked as an insurance agent for American General Life Insurance Co., and for Montgomery Ward as a manager and auditor. He retired in 1999 as director and office manager for the New Castle Sanitation Authority.

He served on the executive committee of the Lawrence County Democratic Party and was once party chairman for a short time.

Dick was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged from the service in 1955.

He was a lifelong member of St. Vitus Church and a member of the Holy Name Society and former member of the Festival Committee. In 1956, he helped organize CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) basketball in Lawrence County and was named Holy Name Society Man of the Year in 1986.

He also was involved in and a member of many organizations over the years, including the Knights of Columbus, People Concerned for the Unborn Child, American Red Cross, Jaycees, United Way, American Cancer Society, Home Street Reunion Committee, American Legion Post 353, Italian American War Veterans, Eagles Aerie 445 and Sons of Italy Lodge 1171.

Dick was an original member of the county's Pop Warner Football League, where he was once a board member.

He is survived by two brothers, Frank A. "Buddy" Ross Jr. and his wife, Anita, and Anthony M. Ross and his wife, Marlene, all of New Castle; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Tillie DiGennaro, and a sister, Dolores Latina.

Interment will be in the veterans' section of Parkside Cemetery.

​Dick was the 387the classmate to walk down the aisle at graduation. After his name in the Yearbook, it says: A good looking boy is he, a catch for any girl you see. Football 11-12, Choir 12.
