The first criterion for the award was need. The money will be paid to the bookstore at the college in Belinda's name.

Presenting the award to Belinda Pistachio are Laura Crawford and John Wyza.
Belinda's mother died last November after a long bout with cancer.  Belinda was very close to her mother and had a major part in her care.  She now lives with her aunt.

Belinda's other awards are:

Hope for the Future Avery Dean Scholarship. Given to a student who overcame the most obstacles to achieve her goals.

National Honor Society. A
certificate of recognition for outstanding scholarship.

Crisci Scholarship. Awarded to students entering some medical field.

Presidential Academic Fitness Award. A letter from President  Bush congratulating her on her dedication to fitness and good wishes for the future.

Wolves Club Scholarship. For outstanding scholarship.

Belinda expressed her thanks for the generous scholarship and said that she will do her best to live up to the honor.  Her aunt also expressed her thanks.

This is how the scholarship came about: The cost for a wooden bench which the class donated to the school and which resides in the entrance to fieldhouse was $1,500. A total of $1,920 was contributed for the bench project by 34 in the class.

The Reunion Committee then decided to take more than $500 from class funds and add it to the excess money to present a one-time $1000 scholarship to a New Castle High School student pursuing a degree in academic education.

Officials at the school decided which student was the most deserving of the award.
